This Privacy Policy explains how The Bitcoin Education Foundation (“the Foundation,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 33-1329921), collects, uses, and protects information when you visit bitcoinedfoundation.org (the “Site”) or interact with us. By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here.
Our guiding principle is data minimization: we ask for the least information necessary, we don’t sell it, and we don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking.
1. Information we collect
a. Information you choose to give us
When you submit one of our contact, educator, or business forms, we collect the name, email address, and message you provide so we can respond to you. Providing this information is voluntary; if you don’t submit a form, we don’t collect it. We do not ask for your phone number, mailing address, or any government or financial identifiers.
b. Donations
We accept donations in Bitcoin only — on-chain and over the Lightning Network. We do not collect or process credit cards, bank details, or similar payment information, and we do not require an account to donate. Bitcoin donations are pseudonymous; however, please be aware that on-chain Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public blockchain that we do not control. If you voluntarily contact us to request a donation receipt, we will use the information you provide (such as a transaction ID and the name/email you share) solely to issue that receipt.
c. Information collected automatically
Like virtually all websites, our hosting provider automatically records standard technical request data — such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages requested — in server logs. This is used only to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Site. We do not use this data to build advertising profiles, and we do not combine it with form submissions to identify you.
d. Local storage on your device
We store a single preference — your chosen light or dark theme — in your browser’s local storage so the Site remembers it on your next visit. This never leaves your device, is not a tracking cookie, and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
2. How we use information
We use the limited information we collect only to:
- respond to your questions, requests, and inquiries;
- send educational materials or resources you specifically ask for;
- issue donation receipts when you request one;
- operate, secure, maintain, and improve the Site; and
- comply with our legal obligations as a nonprofit.
We do not run a marketing mailing list, and we will not add you to one. We contact you only in reply to what you send us.
3. Legal bases for processing
Where the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies, we rely on the following legal bases: your consent (which you give by submitting a form); our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Site and responding to you; and compliance with legal obligations. You may withdraw consent at any time (see “Your rights” below).
4. How information is shared
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information — ever. We share information only with the limited service providers that make the Site function, and only as needed for them to provide their service:
- Form processing — form submissions are delivered to us through Web3Forms, which transmits your message to our inbox. Your name, email, and message pass through their service for this purpose.
- Website hosting — the Site is hosted on Vercel, which processes standard server-log data described above to serve and secure the Site.
- Donation infrastructure — our Lightning address is provided through a third-party Bitcoin wallet service (Coinos). On-chain donations are settled on the public Bitcoin network.
These providers act as our processors and are not permitted to use your information for their own marketing. We may also disclose information if required by law, to comply with legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of the Foundation or others.
5. Cookies and tracking
We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, third-party analytics, pixels, or fingerprinting. Fonts and images are served directly from our own Site rather than third-party networks, so browsing our pages does not expose you to external trackers.
6. Data retention
We keep form submissions only as long as needed to respond to you and to maintain reasonable records of our correspondence, after which they are deleted. Donation-receipt records are kept as required for nonprofit accounting and tax purposes. Server logs are retained by our host for a limited period for security and diagnostics. You may ask us to delete information you’ve submitted at any time.
7. Data security
The Site is served entirely over encrypted HTTPS. We apply reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect the limited information we hold. No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, but because we deliberately collect so little, there is very little exposure. Please never send us your seed phrase, private keys, or passwords — we will never ask for them.
8. Children’s privacy
Our educational materials are designed to be family-friendly, and some are intended to help adults teach children. However, the Site is directed to a general audience, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
9. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act), you may have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- request correction of inaccurate information;
- request deletion of your information;
- withdraw consent or object to certain processing; and
- be free from discrimination for exercising these rights.
Because we collect so little and never sell data, most requests are simple to honor. To exercise any right, email us at thebitcoineducationfoundation@gmail.com and we’ll respond within a reasonable time.
10. International visitors
We operate in the United States, and the information we process is handled in the U.S. and by service providers that may operate elsewhere. By using the Site, you understand your information may be processed in the United States, which may have different data-protection laws than your country.
11. Third-party links
The Site links to external resources — for example, our curriculum on GitHub and our profiles on X. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any site you visit.
12. Do Not Track
Because we do not track visitors across websites or over time, we do not need to respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals — there is no cross-site tracking to disable.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected on this page. Your continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
